Will your accommodation room be held if your Student visa is delayed?

UCL's 2026/27 late-arrival rules
UCL requires a Late Arrival notification through the accommodation portal. A requested arrival date can be no later than 21 days after the contract start date. The room can be held, but accommodation fees remain payable from the original start date.
If the student does not notify UCL and does not arrive within seven days, UCL can withdraw or terminate the accommodation arrangement under the applicable agreement. A prepayment may be lost.

Westminster generally expects students to arrive within one week of the contract start. After that, the room may be reallocated unless full rent has already been paid. When full rent has been paid, the university can hold the room, but the student remains charged for the period and until any later replacement arrangement.

Southampton's 2026/27 agreement states that hall fees are charged from the licence start date rather than the actual later arrival date.
Cardiff University
Cardiff provides specific late-arrival booking windows and asks students who cannot arrive on the contract start date to contact the university.
Why a visa decision can take longer
UKVI currently lists a three-week processing benchmark for Student visa applications made outside the UK. It can take longer when evidence requires verification, more information is requested, an interview is needed, personal circumstances require further review or demand is high.

Do you have to pay rent before you arrive?

Do not book non-refundable travel before the visa decision
UKVI says students are not required to book travel before applying or before a decision is made. Flexible or refundable travel is safer when the timeline remains uncertain.
After approval, check arrival hours. Some universities cannot complete out-of-hours check-in and require one night of temporary accommodation.
When should you consider cancellation?
Cancellation may be relevant when the visa is refused, the university withdraws the offer, the course is deferred or the delay extends beyond the latest permitted arrival date. Do not assume a delay activates No Visa No Pay.
